Art of Acceptance

With the many changes the pandemic has forced upon our lives, we are faced with two major decisions: accept and move with the flow or reject and follow the conventional way of living. Whatever our decision, some things we perceived as normal have adapted a new form, schooling being one of them. With blended learning now entering the picture, we are now challenged to juggle home life and work life as we assist our children in this new endeavor. Acceptance is key to being able to flow with the times.

Change is constant. It’s not only something that we can expect to have to endure during quarantine. Change comes in a variety of life experiences big and small. Acceptance is embracing the full state of things. It is choosing to stop trying to resist in an adverse way. Of course, there are things that should never be tolerated or accepted like all forms of abuse, bullying, psychological, and physical maltreatment; change is called for. Taking matters into one’s hands is needed. One cannot go on forever blaming other people for the circumstances they find themselves in.

Moving from resistance to acceptance is crucial. It begins with recognizing that something needs to change. Look at the reality of the situation and your feelings about it. Stop fixating on the ideal; stay rooted in reality. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. It’s time to create healthy boundaries and learn to shift one’s thoughts when they no longer serve a healthy purpose. Lastly, embrace the situation. It’s your best bet especially if the experience is not causing you direct harm. Look at the experience from a different perspective because perhaps, something good can come out of it.

The art of acceptance is being aware that it is not the situation which determines our happiness; it is about our attitude. Acceptance depends on how we look at and translate a certain situation. It is letting things as is. It is choosing to raise our concerns to the Lord. It is choosing to surrender to the Lord all our longings and insecurities. It is following Him in faith, despite the difficulties. Accepting everything that happens in your life is made easier if you choose to accept yourself because you are loved by the Lord unconditionally. – WITH PAU DE VERA
